ANVR and Ethical Considerations
The government acknowledges its role as well and chooses its position regarding sustainability carefully. The principle to purchase 100% sustainable is an example.
Also very interesting is the effect of this subject on oneself. After all, sustainability starts with yourself as a consumer, a holiday-maker. How do you determine your own position when it comes to sustainability issues? As a tourist you desire to enjoy the country you visit and the people you meet. But what do all those tourist activities mean to the country and its inhabitants, and how do you deal with this knowledge as an individual? In short, by asking such questions you will soon face moral dilemmas and you will enter the area of tourism ethics, you will weigh out matters according to your own standards and values. Quite complicated, often lacking unambiguous answers, but always worth the effort.
The ANVR has already made that consideration. Holiday is joyful, travel is inspirational. Tourism with attention for sustainability in de broadest sense of the word can contribute to improving the environment, can help reduce poverty and may finally contribute to fair trade. Frank Oostdam ANVR |
